Lot 799
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Mid 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Electrum, 22 mm, 5.09 g, 12 h). IIIIVVVIII[...]VVVIIIVII (or similar) Laureate, draped and cuirassed imperial bust to right, seen from behind. Rev. VVV[...]ΩIIHVI[...]LLIHIIIIII (or similar) Minerva standing front, head to left, holding spear in her right hand and placing her left on shield set on ground. Holed and with some scrapes and an edge split, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

The nearest Roman prototype for the reverse of this coin perhaps are Maximian's and Constantius' COMES AVGG-aurei from Treveri (Calicó 4600 and 4808), but the portrait and the long (albeit clearly imitative) legends are more reminiscent of earlier barracks or perhaps late Severan emperors.
